Safety In All Things Great and Small

Use a power strip with a light plugged in to remind you that some device that might be unsafe if left on is on.

A few years ago I stumbled on a blogger who I enjoyed a great deal. She hasn’t blogged since 2015, which makes me sad, but just the other day I was reminded about how we touch each others lives.
In this post she was specifically talking about glue gun tips and tricks and down at the bottom she explained how she helps herself to not forget and leave that glue gun on when she leaves the area.

This caught my attention because years before I had left my glue gun plugged in on the night we took our oldest son and a group of his friends for a dinner out to celebrate his 21rst birthday.  We were coming back home when I remembered I had left the glue gun plugged in, sitting on the floor, surrounded by paper with dogs and cats free ranging.  It had been sitting like that for at least 3 hours and we still had over an hour till we got home.  So this idea of having a light on when the dangerous item was on was sheer genius to me.  Since reading this post, I use this idea for the iron, soldering iron, I have candles lit in the fireplace, anything that I need to remember to check or turn off.

I was reminded of why it’s such a good idea just this past week.  When we are not having an actual wood fire in the fireplace I like to light candles in there while I’m working in my chair next to it.  I also had forgotten that I left my hot glue gun plugged in.  On this day I wasn’t working with the glue gun and it was sitting on the piano bench out of view.  I had finished replanting herbs and left the room.  I left the light on because my hands were full and I thought I was coming right back to clean up.  I didn’t come right back.  I went outside and completely forgot about the candles and the glue gun.  When I finally came back in the house I noticed the light still on and went to turn it off.  Oh yea candles and well that is surprising the glue gun is on!  Nothing probably would have happened if it stayed on overnight or for the next week but you never know.

The other thing that I like about this is when I am working on a project that requires multiple tools plugged in they are all controlled by one switch to turn them on and off.  In this case that was also a downside because I forgot I still had the glue gun plugged in but let’s ignore that for now shall we?  If a light would not be easy to see maybe use a radio or a compressor, something will get your attention.

If you try and navigate the blog site that this idea came from it’s a little difficult but you can still browse through the older posts and in general she has some good ideas.  Till the next post just remember I’ll leave a light on for you.
