Fixing a Broken Vertical Blind Slat

There are times in life where you just need to get something fixed, quickly, simply and cheaply.  I ran into one of those times when we were renting in MI.  I swear that those cheap vertical blinds that they put in rentals are designed to break thereby giving them a reason to not give you your security deposit back.  Also to remind you that living is sad.  You’re left to stare at blinds with missing slats knowing you can’t replace them, sometimes you can’t even hide them with curtains.  Well no more!  Today we take back our happy!  We get back our security deposit!

Read on gentle viewer for the solution to your vertical blind dilemma.

I was in need of a fix around 10 years or so ago.  A quick internet search revealed that there are many, many options to do this repair.  Ranging from taping a paper clip over the broken bit to special kits designed for this task to buying a new slat.  We had the cheap rental white vertical blinds.  I had a white bread tab and hot glue.  We had these blinds over every window and the tab tops just kept breaking.  The rental company would not fix the garbage disposal or the flooding basement, we won’t even talk about the black mold since the basement was also padded and carpeted.  I was not about to start buying new blinds, time to get creative.

You will notice that there is bold blue print on this bread tab which can be hidden with white paint.  In my case one side had blue print and the other side was just white.

I glued the printed side to the back side of the blind leaving the blank side facing out.

This is the result.  The top of that tab slides right into the clip and it worked and looked normal.  The front of the blind looked factory new and the back side was hidden from view by the wall.

The day was saved.  They were happy.  I was happy.  If like me you just need to get it fixed this solution does work and it held up for us better than the factory solution.  Good luck and happy home repair.
